The 10 musical soundtracks to my life so far.

Music has always played a massive part of my life, i have worked in a music shop for over 10 years so it has acted as a soundtrack for some of my most impact I’ve moments.  Here’s 10 of the songs that are important to me.

  1. Lorde- Royals, this was the number one song in the charts when my daughter Tilly Mae was born.  It was played everywhere at the time and will always remind me of that moment of my life.
  2. Hozier – Take me to church.  This was the song I walked down the aisle to on my wedding day.  The words are so impactive to me, it still makes me emotional when I hear it.
  3. Daddy Yankee – Gasolina.  This reggaton hit never fails to make me smile and dance. It makes me think of amazing times of drinking rum (run Thursday) with my friend JBaz. We always have the most fun when we hang out.
  4. Lady Gaga – poker face.  This song along with the whole ‘monster’ album reminds me of going to Japan.  I was so shocked that she was unknown when I went to Tokyo and while I was there here career really took off and all of the clubs played it.
  5. Prince – Purple Rain.  This isn’t particularly my favourite Prince song (I’m a huge fan) but it was the song that first introduced me to the little purple one.  It’s also Tilly’s favourite, it warms my heart everytime she hears the first cord of the guitar and her little face lights up.  It was a pivotal moment to see him play this when I saw him live at the 02 arena in London.
  6. The Contours – Do you love me.  I love every song from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack but this one was also mine and my husbands first dance on our big day.  We even had a little dance routine, which of you know my husband was a massive fear overcome.
  7. John Legend -Refuge.  This reminds me of a really hard time in my life and it the words were so important to me when I really needed to be strong.
  8. Coyote Shivers – Sugarhigh.  From one of my favourite ever movies Empire Records,  like one of the plot lines I always wanted to be a singer but never had the guts to stand up and sing In front of people, after a conversation with a friend a few days ago it looks like this is closer to a reality than I thought.
  9. Paul Simon- father and daughter.  This songs lyrics always make me think of my relationship with my dad.  I am and always have been a daddy’s girl, tears me up every time.
  10. Mary Mary – Shackles (Praise you).  This song takes me back to a time in life when I lived in my first own home. The specific memory it’s tied to is of me walking home from my job at HMV silverlink and the weather was warm and I never wanted it to end.  I always go back there when I hear it.

I love that music pin points us to such feelings and emotions, that take us to the best and worst moments of life .  Life for me wouldn’t be the same without music it was harder to choose the music to go in our wedding than it was choosing my dress.

These songs are not songs that I listen to all the time nor are they all songs I would particularly listen to if I was stranded on a desert island but they are 10 that mean something to me personally, they have become part of the fabric of my life timeline.
Do you have songs that have changed your life or stir up certain memories? I would love to hear about them.

After 2 years of planning we finally pulled of the epic task that was our wedding on Monday 14th November 2016 at the stunning and unforgettable venue of matfen Hall hotel, golf and spa.  (www.matfenhall.com)

The theme of our wedding was somewhere between the Addams family and Cher.  Skulls and glitter a plenty.

Where to start…….the dress OBVIOUSLY.  After trying on numerous white dresses I just didn’t feel like me.  Here’s some  I tried ……..hmmm white is so not my colour!

The rejects

So after a random trip to a wedding showroom I found the dress of my dreams a Roland Joyce BLACK , fully sequinned dress paired with a back veil a handmade headpiece made by my sister and hot pink shoes that was my ‘bridal’ look sorted!

My husband Alex lead the pack with a fitted, black 3 piece lambretta suit with handmade button hole also made by my sister and the raddest pair of skull converse trainers.

My sister is a handy Andy and also made all the button holes (special Lego Ones for my stepsons), a intricate beaded wand for our daughter the flowergirl, my bridesmaids bouquets and last but never least my brooch bouquet, a stunning gradiant mound of sparkling heaven!!

Music was an important part of out big day as we met working at HMV music store.  I waked down the aisle to Hoziers ‘Take me to Church’ as the words hit home and it was as atmospheric as the grand hall in which we were wed.

Our ceremony was perfect and non religious.  My uncle lovingly read Roy Crofts poem entitled ‘Love You’ after which we made our vows, til death do us part.

TillyMae sneaking up for a hug. She is the only one who I allowed to out shine me x

The only piece of music I fully chose and was NEVER up for discussion was our exit song.  I chose the legendary Cher singing the old romantic tune ‘The shoop Shoop song’.  Our guests loved it and we had everybody up and dancing.  What a way to start the celebrations.

Before the party could start we had photos/cocktail hour and our reception meal. Here’s a VERY edited version of my photographs (trust me I would show you all 418 if I could!)

My stepson James.
My stepson Josh and our daughter Tilly Mae.

There was a nod to our love of all things motorbikes throughout the wedding. From our table numbers (our favourite MotoGP riders race numbers) through to our helmets with special decals taking pride of place with our guest book.

Now for all the goodies we didn’t have one but three wedding cakes.  All different but all so special.

Our wedding breakfast was filled with speeches that made us all laugh and cry.

The food Matfen Hall provided was unreal.  Our menu consisted of

  • Oven roasted tomato soup with garlic chips and basil oil.
  • Braised rump of regionally sourced beef in Matfen magic ale, smoked bacon, baby onions and button mushrooms served with seasonal vegetables.
  • Chocolate truffle torte, fudge sauce and clotted cream.

Our evening reception started with our first dance.  We are not the couple who would slow dance so we chose ‘Do you love me?’ By The Contours.  We coreographed a little dance to make it silly and fun.  Dirty dancing is also one of my favourite movies of all time so it was a obvious choice!

For having two left feet my husband danced rings around me.
Brothers and sisters, mums, dads and everyone’s favourite Barry!

Well writing this was hard, it’s difficult to put into words and choose photos to narrate our day.  I have had to leave out so many but I know everyone who came loves us and will love this blog.  I hope it gave you all a little insight into the greatest day of our lives.

Overall to summarise I would say that I loved and appreciated every moment of our big day.  I had a lot of advice going into it about dos and don’ts but I am proud to say I listened to none of it.  We stayed true to exactly what we wanted.  The wedding was truly our vision, a vision that was realised with such amazing support and for that we can never thank those involved enough.  We saved so hard for over 2 years to make this dream a reality and made many sacrifices.

My advice to any couples getting hitched would be to follow your heart.  A wedding doesn’t have to be traditional to be a true wedding, do what makes you happy after all it is your day.  It also doesn’t have to cost the earth, You can DIY a lot Pinterest was my best friend and overall just chill and enjoy it, things will go wrong, people will dissapoint but you get once chance so sit back and take it all in and HAVE FUN!
